Acid reflux occurs when food or acid leaves the stomach back up into the esophagus. There are many causes of acid reflux. Make sure you chew your food properly when eating; this will help aid in digestion.

 

Drinking too much liquid with your meals can cause the stomach acid to dilute. Large meals can cause pressure on the stomach, which then forces the acid into the esophagus.

 

It generally takes up to two hours to properly digest a meal. Do not lie down right after eating a big meal either. If you eat smaller portions at mealtime, then your stomach will not over produce acid.

 

Certain foods should be avoided as well. Foods that contain a lot of fat or fried food, contained refined sugar or caffeine should all be avoided to prevent acid reflux from occurring.

 

If you are overweight, this will increase your risk of suffering from acid reflux as well. Exercise regularly to help get back to a normal weight.

 

In some cases, the sphincter muscle at the end of the esophagus does not close correctly. There are some causes of the weakening of the muscle. Drugs, alcohol, some kinds of foods and smoking can cause the muscle to weaken.

 

If your stomach does not have enough acid, it will not break down the food properly. Antacids have been known to reduce the acid in your stomach as well.


Since antacids can reduce the amount of stomach acid, try other methods to settle your stomach. One tip that seems to be quite popular is to eat a small amount of sauerkraut to ease your stomach.

Some people become dependant on antacids. This is why it is important to try natural methods to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux.
